Sunday dinner. That special time every week when the family, often the extended family, gather together to share a meal. It is a tradition that many families participate in. Most families also have special recipes they use for these gatherings… The traditional foods. I will share my family’s celebrated food recipes here in a new series I have decided to call Sunday Dinner in honor of all the Sunday dinners my past family, current family, and future family enjoy together. I hope we can use and preserve some of these recipes that have been handed down to us.

Nora Farnworth and her children

This particular recipe was not passed down in our family, but found in a newspaper search for my great-grandmother, Nora (Presnell) Farnworth. I knew Nora was a good cook, and my mother enjoyed many good times with her grandmother in the kitchen. I did not know that Nora entered newspaper recipe contests and shared recipes for publication. I thought this fun recipe should be added back to the family repertoire.

(From The Idaho Daily Statesman, Boise, Idaho, Friday Morning, November 18, 1938)

“Mrs. Nora Farnworth of route 4, Boise, who won The Statesman’s first contest, on fruit cake, sent in the following recipe for a butterscotch pudding:

Spiced Butterscotch Tapioca

3 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup boiling water
2 egg whites

Mix dry ingredients well, add boiling water slowly till tapioca thickens mixture. Chill. Beat egg whites till stiff but not dry and fold into mixture. Pour into greased individual molds with tight fitting covers and steam for 25 minutes. Serve hot or cold. Serves 4.”
