Through this site, and my two other public online family trees, I am frequently contacted by cousins who have found a common ancestor on my tree. One cousin contacted me last year about our common ancestors, Abram and Alice (Terrell) Gray. He was also in contact with several other descendants of this couple, and set up a Facebook page for us to keep in touch. We have shared photos and stories together over the past year; my favorite image being this family photo of Abram and Alice and all but two of their children. (The oldest son, Ulysses, was of age by this time. The youngest son, Howard Juber was not yet born.) I had never seen any photos of most of this family, and was delighted to have it!
Since the cousin who collected us all into a group lived near the cemetery where Abram, Alice, and three sons were buried, I asked if he would go get some photos of their plot for me. He was kind enough to do so. However, he found their plot, but discovered it was unmarked. They are buried in the Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, Kentucky, row 44.
After he notified our cousin group about the unmarked gravesites, another generous cousin ordered a headstone for this family. Several in our cousin group were able to contribute to this effort. What a joy it was to see the photo of the proper headstone marking our ancestors’ final resting place.
A group of the cousins who live near the cemetery in Kentucky even met there on a Sunday afternoon to commemorate after the headstone was installed. I wished I could have joined them. It has been fantastic to get to know these cousins, even just virtually.
